Corpus Christi ISD has turned to a familiar Coastal Bend football name for its next athletics leader, naming David McHugh to oversee Miller Metro High School’s athletics program for the 2026 to 2027 school year.

McHugh is set to begin in May, giving the Miller Bucs a new athletic coordinator and head football coach ahead of the next school cycle.

McHugh arrives from Bishop High School, where he served as head football coach. Before that move, he spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Ingleside, where the Mustangs put together an 11 and 2 record in 2023 behind one of the more productive offenses in the state.

His coaching path also includes two seasons as defensive coordinator at Taft, one season as wide receivers coach at Mathis, and one season as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at San Antonio TMI.

That background gives Miller a coach with experience on both sides of the ball and a résumé built almost entirely in South Texas football.

McHugh’s tenure starts in couple of days

McHugh’s first season as a head coach at Bishop ended with a 5 and 6 record and a playoff appearance, which put him on the radar as one of the local candidates to watch when the Miller opening came into focus.

His ties to the region go beyond the sideline. McHugh serves on the Coastal Bend Coaches Association board of directors and is also a brand ambassador for the Texas High School Coaches Association, two roles that reflect how deeply he is plugged into the area’s coaching community.

That local standing was part of what made him an appealing fit for Miller, where the job calls for more than drawing up game plans on Friday night. It also requires someone who can carry the broader athletics program forward.

McHugh’s own football background adds another layer. He played at McMurry University and was a wide receiver there after a standout high school career at Ingleside, where he was a four sport athlete, a three time All South Texas selection, a two time all state pick, and a district MVP.

That playing résumé is not the reason Miller hired him, but it does round out the picture of a coach who has spent most of his life around the game and around Texas school sports.

The move also signals the kind of direction Corpus Christi ISD wants for Miller. Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez highlighted McHugh’s longstanding commitment to Coastal Bend athletics and his regard for community engagement, two qualities that matter in a program with Miller’s history and visibility in Corpus Christi.

“The committee appreciated Coach McHugh’s longstanding commitment to Coastal Bend athletics as well as his high regard for community engagement,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “We look forward to an exciting new chapter for the Miller Bucs under his leadership.”

With May marked as the start date, the next phase for the Bucs is already beginning to take shape.

For Miller, this is more than a routine coaching change.

The district is handing the athletics program to someone with recent head coaching experience, deep Coastal Bend ties, a background in offensive and defensive football, and a career that has moved through several South Texas programs before landing in Corpus Christi.

That gives the Bucs a coach who knows the region, knows the players he will be competing against, and now gets the chance to shape Miller’s next chapter.
