Geneva High School is mourning the loss of Ethan Conner, a member of the Class of 2024 and former football player whose death has left family, classmates, teammates and friends heartbroken.

The school shared the news with a message that said it was deeply saddened by the loss of one of its own. For many in the community, Ethan was more than a former student athlete.

He was a young man who left a strong impression on the people around him, both on the field and in everyday life.

His family’s words have carried the deepest weight. In a message shared after his passing, Amy Perry Conner thanked everyone who had surrounded the family with support during the difficult days that followed.

“We would like to thank each and every person who has text, called, brought food, came by and cried with us, but most importantly prayed for us during this difficult time,” she wrote. “We have been blessed beyond words. Ethan left a void that will never be replaced but oh what a glorious day it will be when we see our baby again! He left a huge impact in this world in just a few short years! He made a bigger impact than we knew and it has showed.”

That message has become the heart of the tribute. It speaks to the kind of young man Ethan was and the space he leaves behind.

A student athlete remembered for character

People who knew Ethan have been describing him in the same way. Respectful. Honest. Hardworking. Genuine.

Those are the words that keep coming up in tributes from friends and neighbors who say he was the kind of person whose character stood out without needing attention.

One of the most detailed remembrances came from Spencer Cole Crosby, who said Ethan was one of those people who made a lasting impression from the first time they met.

He described Ethan as “respectful, genuine, hardworking, and honest,” and said that every time they crossed paths, Ethan greeted him with the same handshake and the same kind of friendly conversation.

Crosby said Ethan was the kind of young man who carried himself with sincerity and good intentions, someone whose presence gave him hope for the younger generation.

He also shared a memory about Ethan coming out to give him an estimate on a job and said he wanted to help him succeed because he could tell Ethan was trying to build something for himself the right way. Crosby said he cried when he heard the news, even though he and Ethan were not the closest of friends, because of the impact Ethan had on people.

That kind of response says a lot about the life he lived. Ethan was not only a football player at Geneva High School. He was also someone people believed in, rooted in a family that loved him deeply and a school community that recognized his value.

Messages from classmates and friends have echoed the same heartbreak. Many have said he was a great young man, a sweet soul, and someone who always carried himself with kindness.

One classmate wrote that he was “a great young man with a big heart.” Another said he was “sweet, respectful” and always smiling.

For Geneva, the loss is personal. Ethan was part of the Class of 2024, part of the football program, and part of a group of young people whose lives are still unfolding.

Now, his name is being remembered in the voices of those who knew him best.

The family’s message made clear that grief is still fresh, but so is gratitude for the love surrounding them. Calls, visits, prayers and meals have all helped carry them through a painful time they never expected.

What remains now is the memory of a young man who made a bigger impact than many realized, a former Geneva High School football player whose life touched more people than he probably knew.
