Jacksonville, Florida is rallying around Mikah Howell, a 17 year old Mandarin High School football player who remains in the ICU after being badly injured in a shooting in the city’s Inwood Terrace neighborhood.
Howell is known as an honor roll student with scholarship offers to play college football, and his family says the last several days have been spent praying for a miracle while doctors work to bring down the swelling and figure out the next steps in his care.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting as an accidental shooting, and public details about what happened remain limited.
The incident report it obtained does not explain what led up to the gunshot wound, and the sheriff’s office has not released much else about the case.
What is clear is that Mikah suffered a traumatic brain injury and was rushed into intensive care, where he has remained in critical condition.

His family says the hardest part right now is waiting. Mikah’s mother has stayed by his side in the ICU and has not left while his condition remains serious.
June 13 update from the family said he was “holding his own” while doctors waited for the swelling to subside before deciding on the next stage of treatment.
That update also made clear how much the family appreciates the prayers, messages and donations that have already come in.
A football player with a future that had already started to open up
Before the shooting, Howell had already built a reputation as more than just a good football player. He was an honor roll student with scholarship offers on the table, which made the shooting even more painful for everyone around him.
He was not just a talented athlete. He was also a student who had put together the kind of school record that usually points toward a bigger future.
That future is now on hold while his family waits in the ICU and hopes for signs of improvement. The family’s GoFundMe page says Mikah, also known as “Vegas,” suffered a brain trauma on June 6, 2026, and that his mother is at his bedside while medical bills and living expenses continue to pile up.
The fundraiser says the family is facing an incredibly difficult time with minimal updates as doctors and loved ones wait for progress.
For teammates, classmates and people in the Mandarin football community, that combination of talent, discipline and youth is what makes the story so hard to take in.
Mikah is the kind of player who draws attention for what he can do on the field, but the response now has nothing to do with touchdowns or recruiting rankings.
It is about survival, recovery and the hope that a young man with so much ahead of him can pull through.
A community keeps showing up with prayers and support
The outpouring around Mikah has been immediate. Friends, parents and supporters have flooded the comments and fundraiser page with prayers for healing, strength for his mother and comfort for the family.
Some have written short messages like “Prayers for Mikah,” while others have asked for peace, protection and a full recovery.
Those messages reflect how quickly the community has wrapped itself around him.
One commenter wrote, “Prayers for Mikah n his family be lifted up n prayers . Jesus is out healer.”
Another said, “Prayers for Mikah’s strength and healing also strength and prayers for his mom.” A third added, “Sending prayers for comfort, strength and healing.”
That kind of response has become part of the story too, because it shows how many people are hoping for a positive update and refusing to give up on him.
The fundraiser also says the family is dealing with more than the emotional toll of the shooting. With Mikah’s mother staying at the hospital and unable to work, the page explains that the financial strain is growing as medical bills and everyday expenses keep rising.
Supporters have been encouraged to donate or share the page if they cannot contribute directly.
For now, the family is asking for continued prayers while they wait for the swelling to go down and doctors to decide what comes next.
The uncertainty is hard, but the message from those closest to him has stayed consistent.
Mikah is still fighting, his family is still standing with him, and the Jacksonville community is still hoping for the kind of update every family in this position wants to hear
