Burlington High School’s girls soccer team kept its strong spring going Thursday night, using a fast start and steady pressure to beat Keokuk 7-0 at Bracewell Stadium on Senior Night.
Isabella Ziegler scored in the third minute and again in the 35th minute, setting the tone early as the Grayhounds built a 4-0 halftime lead and never let Keokuk settle into the match.
Daphne Brown added two goals, while Morrigan Elliot, Kiara Winski and Alyssa Burchett also scored. Sophia Young recorded the shutout in goal.
The Grayhounds did not just win. They controlled the game from the start. Burlington fired 42 shots and put 26 on goal, a level of attacking pressure that kept Keokuk pinned back for most of the night.
The win also came in the middle of a demanding stretch, with Burlington playing its third game of the week after a 2-2 tie at Fort Madison on Monday and a 3-0 win at Fairfield on Tuesday.
Head coach Jacob Falls said the team adjusted its formation and thought the change worked well, while also noting the challenge of a heavy week and the importance of sending the seniors off properly.
A ranked team carrying real momentum
The result fit the profile Burlington has built this spring. The Grayhounds were listed at No. 14 in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Class 2A rankings in the April 30 poll, and a local sports roundup noted that Burlington was 7-0 against Iowa opponents at that point while outscoring those teams 40 to 3 in its wins.
Burlington’s schedule page on MaxPreps now shows the Grayhounds at 6-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Southeast Conference, with the Keokuk win and the rest of the week’s results still pushing the team deeper into league play.
The schedule also gives Burlington a quick chance to keep the momentum going.
MaxPreps lists the Grayhounds back at Keokuk on May 12 at 5:00 p.m. and then home against Muscatine on May 14 at 5:00 p.m., a short turnaround that will test how much the team has left after a busy run of matches.
For Burlington, the night was about more than a lopsided score.
The seniors were honored afterward, the shutout kept the defense’s confidence high, and the team continued to show why it has stayed near the top of the Southeast Conference picture.
If the Grayhounds keep putting together starts like this one, the rest of the schedule will keep looking very manageable.
