Madison, West Virginia is mourning the sudden loss of Jimmy “J” Ray Caudill II, a 1995 graduate of Scott High School who died unexpectedly on June 9, 2026, at the age of 49.
Caudill was born on August 27, 1976, to Jimmy Caudill and the late Joyce Gunnoe. He was remembered by family and friends as an outgoing man with a big heart, a sharp sense of humor and a gift for making people laugh.
Those closest to him said he was the kind of person who always looked out for the people he cared about and gave generously without asking for anything in return.
He loved the outdoors and spent his free time fishing, riding in the mountains, camping, sitting around a fire or simply spending time with family and friends.
But above all, his life centered on the people closest to him, especially his wife, his daughters and the father he remained deeply bonded to throughout his life.
Caudill married Donna on October 10, 2006, and the two built a life together with their daughters, Jaydon MaRae Caudill, 16, and Harlyn Rayleeann Caudill, 14.
Family members said his wife and children were the center of his world and that he took great pride in being present for them.
He is also survived by his father and stepmother, Jimmy and Dorothy Caudill; his sister, Felicia Gunnoe; his father in law, Mike Albright; Matthew Dillon; and a host of extended family members and friends who will continue to carry his memory forward.
A former Scott High School athlete remembered with love
Caudill’s connection to Scott High School remained a meaningful part of his story. As a former student athlete, he was remembered as someone who carried the lessons of his school years into adulthood, especially the values of loyalty, hard work and friendship.
That connection has been reflected in the response from the community. Messages of sympathy have poured in for the Caudill family, with friends and neighbors sharing prayers and condolences.
One person wrote, “May the love and memories of Jimmy bring you comfort and peace in the days ahead.”
Another said simply, “So sorry for your loss.” Others offered prayers for the family and noted how deeply he will be missed.
The comments paint a clear picture of how many lives he touched.
Friends remembered him as a man who made people laugh, a loving husband and father, and someone who brought joy into the lives around him. For many, his death feels especially hard because of the way he lived, close to family and full of personality.
A visitation was held one hour before the funeral service on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia.
The service was held at 2:00 p.m., with burial following in Albright Cemetery in Lake, West Virginia.
Though his life ended far too soon, those who knew Jimmy J. Ray Caudill II say his memory will live on through the laughter he shared, the love he gave his family and the example he set for the people closest to him.
