Franklin County, Kentucky is grieving the loss of KeAaron Jones, a student at Franklin County High School who died on June 9 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He would have been entering his junior year this fall, and the news has left classmates, teammates, coaches and teachers heartbroken.
Jones was deeply involved in school life and athletics. He played on the boys volleyball and basketball teams and was also part of the schoolโs choir and band programs, including chamber choir and wind ensemble.
He earned recognition from the Kentucky Music Educators Association All State Choir and received the Paul Wyler Spirit Award for Resiliency, a reflection of the way he carried himself through school and through his illness.

Franklin County Schools said Jones was one of the brightest parts of the Flyer family. Principal Joey Thacker described him as someone who left a lasting mark on everyone around him.
โKeAaron will certainly be missed by all of our FCHS family. He was a pleasure to be around and was a light to his classmates, teammates, teachers, and community,โ Thacker said. โHe leaves an unmatched legacy of kindness and humility at our school.โ
Those who coached him saw the same spirit. Tom Marshall, the FCHS boys volleyball coach, said Jones and his family faced the illness with strength and grace.
โKeAaron and his family are some of the strongest people I have met,โ Marshall said. โKnowing the diagnosis, they chose to smile and make others feel better. His smile and positive attitude put his friends and teammates at ease. We are all better people because we knew him.โ
A community that rallied around him
When the school learned of Jonesโ cancer diagnosis earlier this year, the Franklin County community stepped in fast. In April, FCHS hosted the โTurn it Up!โ volleyball tournament fundraiser to support the Jones family.
The event brought in more than $10,000, a strong show of support from the school and community around him.
That same support continued after his death. Messages from family members, teammates and friends filled social media with grief, love and memories of a young man who meant a great deal to many people.
LaTiphia Brewer, Jonesโ aunt, shared a deeply personal tribute after his death. She wrote about the final days of his life, the pain of losing him, and the familyโs effort to care for him with love and dignity.
โIt is with shattered hearts that we share the news that our beloved KeAaron passed away last night, June 9, 2026 at 9:31PM,โ she wrote. โKeAaron was more than a son, grandson, nephew, brother, teammate and friend. He was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him.โ
She added that the family held on to hope throughout his fight and said his spirit never left him, even while his body grew weaker.
โWhile cancer may have taken his body, it never took his spirit,โ she wrote. โWhile his battle has ended, the love he gave and the impact he made on so many people will live on forever.โ
A loss felt beyond the classroom
The school said counselors will be available to help students who need support as the community processes the loss.
Families are being encouraged to talk with their children about the death and to reach out to the school if they need additional help.
For many in Franklin County, Jonesโ death is especially painful because he was so involved in so many parts of school life.
He was not only a student athlete, but also a singer, musician and friend to the people around him. The combination made him a familiar and well loved face in the building.
His family said they are now facing the difficult task of laying him to rest and are asking for continued support as they plan funeral and memorial arrangements.
At this time, no final service details have been announced, but a close family-friend has started a fundraiser campaign.
Jones leaves behind a younger brother, Aaron, and a family that described him as a boy who smiled through hardship and lifted others even while fighting for his own life.
In their tribute, the family said he remained hopeful to the end and that his love and impact will live on forever.
For the Franklin County High School community, KeAaron Jones will be remembered as a Flyer who brought kindness, humility, talent and strength to every part of his life.
