Daniel Sobkowicz did not hear his name called during the 2026 NFL Draft, but his next football chance still came quickly.

The former Illinois State wide receiver is joining the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent, giving him a chance to carry one of the best receiving careers in Redbirds history into an NFL building.

Houston added Sobkowicz after the draft as part of its rookie free-agent class, placing him in a wide receiver group where every offseason rep will matter.

For Sobkowicz, the move is not just another post-draft signing. It is the next step after a college career built on production, loyalty, and a postseason run that pushed Illinois State all the way to the FCS national championship game.

Sobkowicz finished his 2025 season with 83 receptions, 1,141 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns, numbers that made him one of the most productive receivers outside the FBS spotlight.

His final year also helped turn Illinois State into one of the biggest stories in the FCS playoffs.

Sobkowicz Built His Name at Illinois State

Sobkowicz arrived at Illinois State from Arlington Heights, Illinois, after playing at Rolling Meadows High School.

At 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he became a reliable target with size, body control, and enough route-running skill to keep growing every season.

His college rise was steady. As a redshirt freshman, he caught 31 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns.

In 2023, he broke out with 68 catches for 933 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors.

A year later, he followed that with 80 receptions for 1,108 yards and nine touchdowns, again landing on the All-MVFC second team.

By 2025, he had become the clear center of the Redbirdsโ€™ passing game. He was not just putting together a good senior year. He was rewriting the program record book.

Sobkowicz ended his Illinois State career with 262 receptions, 3,559 receiving yards and 41 receiving touchdowns.

He became the programโ€™s all-time leader in receptions and receiving touchdowns, while also setting the single-season receiving touchdown record with 19.

Those numbers explain why the Texansโ€™ signing is worth watching. Sobkowicz was not a one-game wonder or a late-season flash. He produced across multiple years, kept improving, and ended his college career as one of the best players Illinois State has ever had at the position.

His playoff run made the story even stronger.

Illinois State entered the FCS playoffs as one of the last teams in the field, then kept winning on the road.

Sobkowicz became one of the biggest reasons the Redbirds made it to Nashville for the national championship game.

During that postseason push, he had 29 catches for 403 yards and seven touchdowns before the title game.

One of the defining moments came in the upset of top-seeded North Dakota State, a 29-28 win that helped push Illinois Stateโ€™s run from impressive to unforgettable.

Sobkowicz was the player defenses had to locate, yet he still kept making plays in the biggest moments.

Texans Add a Productive FCS Receiver After the Draft

The Texans are not handing Sobkowicz a roster spot. Undrafted receivers rarely get that kind of path. He will have to earn attention through rookie work, training camp, preseason snaps, and special teams value.

But Houston is giving him a real opening.

Sobkowicz brings size, proven hands, and years of production. He also brings the kind of college background that can help an undrafted player survive the first wave of roster competition.

He had to be consistent at Illinois State, had to win against attention from defenses, and had to deliver when the Redbirdsโ€™ season was on the line.

NFL listed Sobkowicz among its top undrafted rookie wide receivers after the 2026 NFL Draft, placing him in the same group as several receivers from larger programs.

That shows his production at Illinois State was not ignored, even if he slipped through the draft.

The challenge now changes. At Illinois State, he was the featured target. In Houston, he will be one of several rookies trying to prove he belongs.

The fastest way to stand out will be catching everything thrown his way, learning quickly, blocking with effort, and showing the Texans he can help beyond a traditional receiver role.

His size gives him a chance in contested-catch situations. His career numbers show reliability. His postseason run showed he can handle pressure. Those traits do not guarantee an NFL roster spot, but they give him a case.

For Houston, Sobkowicz is a low-risk addition with a strong production profile. For Sobkowicz, it is the kind of opportunity that often defines undrafted players.

The draft did not give him the moment, but the Texans gave him the next door.

Now the former Illinois State standout gets the chance to turn a record-breaking FCS career into something more.

He already left Normal as one of the greatest receivers in Redbirds history. His next test is proving that the same game can travel to Houston.
