Mason Kurtis Mills was counting down the days. Senior year at Kossuth High School in Alcorn County, Mississippi was right around the corner, and everything he had been working toward was almost there.

The Friday night lights. The final season with his teammates. The memories that only come with being a senior on a football team you love. Mason was 17 years old and had every reason to be excited about what was coming.

On Saturday morning, June 6, 2026, Mason was killed in a crash on Highway 72 West in the Union Center community. He never made it to that senior season.

His school released a statement that the entire community has been holding onto since the news broke.

“He was an amazing young man who always had a smile on his face. Please pray for his family and our Kossuth community as we have lost another way too soon.”

Mason leaves behind his parents Benji and Lindy Mills, his three sisters Madi Jo, Marli, and Memory, his girlfriend Brittan Dawkins, and a community that is still trying to find words for what it lost.

A Gentle Giant Who Showed Up for Everyone

The people who knew Mason kept coming back to the same descriptions. Gentle giant. Biggest heart. Always smiling.

The kind of kid who showed up when you needed him without being asked, who put everyone above himself, who had a joke ready at exactly the right moment.

He was a good kid. Not perfect, but good, and everyone who knew him loved him.He loved the outdoors.

Hunting and fishing were his resets. He loved his sisters fiercely and would do anything for them. He loved football and everything that came with it, the grind of practice, the brotherhood with his teammates, the electric feeling of a Friday night under the lights. That was Mason.

Taylor Alece Johnson, who had known Mason from school, posted a tribute that captured exactly who he was in the hallways as much as on the field.

“All I can see is Mason’s big smile. Even while he was on that scooter wheeling down the hall or touring NEMCC on crutches, he had a smile on his face. We had such a good talk the last week of school and we were all so excited for their senior year. My heart just breaks for this precious family, the KHS football team, and the class of 2027.”

Amber Lee Johnson shared her own grief, writing that Mason always knew how to make you smile or crack a joke that could brighten your day.

“He was such a good friend to Alyssa and just a genuinely great kid all the way around. We’re going to miss him and his big grin so much. It’s so hard watching these kids grow up and then seeing something so heartbreaking happen. No words could ever take away the pain his family is feeling but I hope they know just how loved Mason was.”

Brittany Stephens asked for prayers for his parents specifically, writing “No mother should have to bury her baby especially one at such a young age. Oh God please give them strength.”

The Alcorn Central Volleyball program also posted a tribute, writing that once again their community had been rocked by the tragic loss of another young life and asking people to pray for peace for the family and community.

    Saying Goodbye to Number 17

Funeral services for Mason Kurtis Mills will be held at 1PM on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Wheeler Grove Baptist Church, with burial to follow at Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday from 5PM to 8PM and Tuesday from 12PM until service time, both at Wheeler Grove.

His pallbearers are Memphis Beene, Damien Baker, Parker Gunn, Greyson Ivy, Owen Jobe, Alan Shelton, and Ayden Wilbanks. The Senior Class of 2027 and the entire Kossuth High School Football Team will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mason is also survived by his maternal grandmother Nita Seago, uncles Shawn and Mike Seago, aunt Tina Tyson, and paternal great grandmother Pauline Hunt.

His family is also facing the financial weight that comes with sudden and unexpected loss.

Funeral expenses and time away from work do not pause for grief, and his community has been rallying around the Mills family to help carry some of that burden so they can focus on each other.
