Pontotoc, Mississippi lost one of its brightest young people on Thursday, June 4, 2026, when Jennifer Rebekah Mahan, 17, passed away in Pontotoc County.

She was set to begin her senior year at Pontotoc High School in the fall, a milestone she never got to reach. The news hit the school, her church, and the broader community fast and hard.

Pontotoc High School posted a tribute on Facebook shortly after, writing

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of one of our students. Please join us in keeping Jennifer’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire Warrior Family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Jennifer was not just a student. She was a member of the Pontotoc High School archery team, a dedicated 4-H member, and a devoted attendee of West Heights Baptist Church, where she had followed her faith through believer’s baptism.

People who knew her described her the same way every time, bubbly, warm, never a stranger to anyone she met, and always looking for a good time no matter the situation.

She is survived by her parents Jamie and Christy Mahan, her brothers Jeremiah and Jonah Mahan, her grandparents, a wide circle of aunts, uncles, and cousins, and the person her family described as the love of her life, Tyler Winter.

Those Who Knew Her Are Heartbroken

Laura Reed, Jennifer’s 4-H Agent, shared a tribute that captured exactly who Jennifer was to the people in her life.

“Yesterday I received news that I never wanted to hear as a 4-H Agent, that one of my sweet 4-Hers had passed away,” she wrote. “Jennifer had such a bubbly personality, she almost always had a smile on her face, and was determined to have a fun time no matter the circumstance. She was an excellent bowman and was getting ready to start her Senior year at PHS. We will miss her dearly.”

Her friend Heather Russell posted a simple but heartfelt message, writing “Such a sweet friend. We’re going to miss you on this side. I love you so much Jenny.”

Judy McCormick reached out directly to Jennifer’s parents, writing “Christy and Jamie, I am so sorry for the pain you are experiencing with the loss of your precious child. Only with God can you continue on. Prayed for all of the family.”

DeeAnn Potts shared a memory that showed just how deeply rooted Jennifer was in her community, writing “I remember when she was a little girl I would see her with her Mama in the grocery store. Praying for this family.”

Beverly Ross also offered prayers, writing “Prayers for Jamie and Christy and family during this sad time in their lives. I pray God gives you the strength you need in this difficult time.”

    Funeral Services and Final Farewell

Funeral services for Jennifer Mahan will be held at 4PM on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at West Heights Baptist Church in Pontotoc, Mississippi.

Visitation begins at 1PM and runs through service time. Burial will follow at Turnpike Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc is assisting the family.

Pallbearers will be Jeremiah Mahan, Jonah Mahan, Tyler Winter, Drake Merritt, Ethan Stubblefield, and Colton Wooten.

Jennifer Mahan was 17 years old. She had a whole senior year ahead of her, a sport she loved, a faith she lived by, and a personality that made every room feel different when she walked into it.

Pontotoc is feeling that absence right now in a way that words do not fully cover.
